Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a common problem seen in 10% of the population.   It is seen more often with people who work at a keyboard.  It is caused by entrapment of the medial nerve as it passes through the wrist to the thumb side of the hand.

Pain to the pinky side of the hand is probably not caused by a problem in the carpal tunnel but rather radiates from the shoulder and is a misdiagnosed case of Thoracic Outlet Syndrome.

What causes Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

  • impingement of the medial nerve as it passes through the carpal tunnel
  • bone spurs in the wrist that impinge the medial nerve
  • repetitive motion tasks that aggravate the condition
  • improper positioning of hands and wrist at a keyboard can cause additional stress

What can you do?

  • wear a cockup splint.  You may have seen a cashier at the supermarket wearing one of the braces on their wrist.
  • surgery to open up the space and allow more room for the nerve to pass
  • adjustments and DNFT is one of the few techniques that can directly address a problem of the extremities
