Your neck is comprised of an elaborate system of joints, muscles, discs and ligaments.  This allows you to turn and move in more directions than you may imagine.  Unfortunately, when one of more things are not functioning quite right you can have a real problem.

Some things that can cause a neck problem

  • Whiplash: the quick acceleration and deceleration of you head on your neck in can cause multiple injuries to the joints and tiny muscles and ligaments that allow you to move so freely.
  • Poor posture: strain on one part of your spine will create addtional strain in other areas of the spine.
  • Sleeping the wrong way: mechanically there are two things that can cause a subluxation.  First, is a lot of force over a short period of time as seen in a whiplash.  The second is a little force over a long period of time like when you fall asleep on the couch with your head in a bad position.
  • Stress: many people carry their stress in their neck, some do so across the shoulders and others in their legs.  If you are in the first two groups you may feel the effects of stress in your neck.

What you can do about neck pain

  • Exercise:  staying in good shape is of the utmost importance
  • Prevent whiplash injuries:  avoid accidents which is not always the easiest thing to do.  You can also set your headrest so that the back of your head is no more than three inches from the middle of the headrest.
  • Relax:  learn to meditate, do yoga or tai chi and play as hard as you work.
