If you look at a skeleton you will see that the leg is attached to the pelvis with a solid ball and socket joint.  While technically the shoulder joint is listed as a ball and socket for the most part is just hangs off your neck with an elaborate system of muscles and ligaments.  This does provide for a great amount of mobility in the joint but it also complicates matters when it comes to correcting a problem.

What kinds of shoulder problems are there?

  • rotator cuff injuries are more common with athletes and involve the muscles that connect the humerus (upper arm) to the scapula (shoulder blade)
  • separated shoulders can involve a fracture of the bony structures that hold the shoulder in place
  • separated shoulders can also involve the ligaments between the clavicle and the shoulder

What can be done?

  • specific exercises to strengthen the shoulder
  • avoid the activities that aggravate the problem which may mean giving up the things you like to do
  • over the counter pain medications can offer relief but long term use can have other adverse effects on internal organs
  • adjustments can at the least speed up the healing process
