The nerves and blood vessels that go to the arms pass through the Thoracic Outlet.  These pass between the clavicle or collar bone and the first rib.  When there is pressure on these structures then the nerves and vessels are also impinged.  Thoracic outlet syndrome is common with people who have had an injury to the shoulder or collar bone.  It is also common among large breasted women.

What are the symptoms?

  • numbness and tingling down the affected arm
  • numbness and tingling to the third, fourth and fifth fingers
  • symptoms are often noticed after going to bed because the pressure to the area from bony structures or the weight of the breast is relieved when the victim lays down
  • numbness and tingling will often start up 20 minutes after laying down disrupting sleep

What can be done?

  • because the symptoms involve the fingers Thoracic Outlet Syndrome is often mistaken for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Thoracic Outlet Syndrome affects the third, forth and fifth fingers while Carpal Tunnel Syndrome affects the thumb and index finger.
  • When you speak on the phone do not hold it to your ear with your shoulder.
  • The best way to correct this is by adjustments.
